Many people are drawn to Japanese culture because of its beauty, its mixture of old and new, and the rich history of the nation. In this course, we will join culture with arts to get a glimpse into the spectacular Japanese theatre, known as Kabuki.

In this course students will look at performances of five of the major forms of Japanese theater—bugaku (Imperial Court Dances), noh theater, kyōgen (comic theater), bunraku (puppet theaer), and kabuki—along with along with plays from the theaters. The course will introduce a survey of the historical of each form of performance, basic terminology for each form, playwrights of the theatres, and through class discussions will examine the ways in which a performance is carried out in each of the forms.

Experience an ancient art form that is still alive today!
